February CV writing workshop

CMHA Employment Project held second workshop on 20th of February, illustrated the importance of CV and how to write it.

CV is the open sesame to your prospective employer, only those outstanding this can catch the eye of employers among piles of CV, gaining further interview opportunity.

CV has many templates as well as various way of writing, how to write a fabulous CV is not an easy task.

Many of the participants who atttended the workshop haven't realized about this before, taken CV writing merely a simple task to put in relevant information!

People tend to neglect Cover Letter while presenting their CVs, have no understanding about the importance of Cover letter.

Cover letter is a letter states your target business/employer/address and other information posted with your CV, with desription where you got the vacancy information, your premium advantage, how you match the job and the compliment to employers.

Cover letter is significantly important as most recruiters don’t bother to read the CV after a unattractive Cover Letter.

Khim is expected to hold one workshop every month, hope the February one have lent you a hand. The workshop in March is about Successful Interview, and I will inform everyone after the date is settled.

Why apprenticeship

Mayor urges London businesses to take on apprentices
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and the London Apprenticeship Company (LAC) have called for more support for apprentices in the capital.

Speaking at the launch of a new Transport for London (TfL) apprenticeship scheme, the Mayor said that taking on an apprentice was a fantastic way to bring fresh talent and energy into a business. "I salute all businesses across London that already have apprenticeship schemes in place and am encouraging many more to follow suit," he said. According to the Mayor, over 80 per cent of businesses that employ apprentices report increased productivity in the workplace.

As part of the TfL initiative, the LAC has agreed to recruit 50 young people to take part in a training programme at the London Transport Museum. The LAC, which is part funded by the London Development Agency, is a not for profit organisation that makes it easier for small and medium-sized organisations to take on apprentices. The LAC recruits the apprentices and employs them on behalf of a host business.

One group that has taken on an apprentice via the LAC is business organisation London First. Hannah Mayne was hired in summer 2009. "We have been delighted with Hannah's progress," says chief executive Baroness Jo Valentine. "She has received mentoring and opportunities to develop her skills, while London First has benefited through employing a dedicated member of staff at a competitive rate who is eager to learn and grow."

The TfL initiative was announced during Apprenticeship Week 2010, which took place between 1 February and 5 February. Read about Apprenticeship Week 2010 on the National Apprenticeship Service website - Opens in a new window.

Benefit of volunteering

Is the daily grind getting you down? Perhaps you should work for free, a study sugests.

Volunteer work has numerous positive psychological benefits. And even high stress roles, such as volunteering for fire or rescue services--and a better listener--at your job. "Volunteering can satisfy needs that aren't met through work and helps people to thoroughly disengage from daily jobs, " said Dr Eva Mojza of the university of Konstanz.

February Events for CMHA
“CV writing is so annoying!” “How should I start my CV?” “What makes a good CV?” Have these questions ever bothered you?

Why do we write CVs? Why are CVs worth so much of our time and effort?

Constructing a CV is the first step to finding a job, it is the first point of contact between a job seeker and a potential employer. It is only when your potential is demonstrated through your CV that you might have the chance of an interview. Even a skilled and talented person would not be able to find a job or an interview chance if he writes his CV carelessly.

During this recession, there are few jobs, and even fewer suitable jobs; many employers go through hundreds of CVs every day and it would be impossible to find a job if you don’t know how to write a CV or you don’t treat the construction of your CV as a serious issue; also if you can’t demonstrate the linkage between the required skill and experience and your “selling points” sincerely.

Therefore, CMHA is specially opening a “CV Writing Workshop” for its Employment Project Service users. If you are interested in attending this workshop, please contact us and join as a service user for free!

CMHA Employment Project “CV Writing Workshop”
Date: 22nd February (Monday) 11:00 to 13:30
Venue: CMHA
155 Curtain Road,
London Ec2A 3QY
(Nearest station is Old Street)
Contact: Khim 020 7613 1008

The CMHA Employment Propject will also be holding a talk at the Chinese Information and Advice Centre (CIAC), explaining and presenting how our project helps Chinese job seekers find a job in England. Furthermore, our CMHA National Youth Volunteers will be giving a short drama presentation to promote mental and physical well being while recruiting new volunteers.

If you are interested in attending the talk and drama show, please contact the CIAC 08453131868 (Ext. 201) Miss Xiao.
